After seasons of stagnation and even regression, with a very, very average 2022/23 financial year, Coby White found color again during this campaign. He even shone brightly (at his level) with his best career numbers: 19.1 points, 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds on average.
So much so that he was not far from being crowned the best progression of the season. But it was ultimately, by a short margin, Tyrese Maxey who was elected MIP. Was he disappointed?
“No matter who won, given the finalists, we couldn’t go wrong. But I lost »he delivers to SLAM. “There is no gratification. You win or you lose, that's how I see things. It’s additional motivation, without animosity. But it's behind me, I had a good season and I must continue to progress in all areas. »
His season can be summed up by drawing a well-known curve. It starts from the bottom, then goes up again and again, stays for a while at the top, before finally going back down.
“I wasn't very good the first month, I wasn't myself. But I remember telling my brother that I knew things would fall into place,” says the Bulls playmaker. “Then, in December, something clicked, and confidence grew. We then become comfortable in our role and we feel that we are at our level. We are in tune with ourselves. »
“I think the fatigue was important in certain matches in which I was not good”
The last weeks will be more difficult and the reason is simple: a physical breakdown. Coby White had never played so much during a regular season and as he was more involved than ever, he paid the price.
“This summer I need to improve my physical condition. I can’t let fatigue be a factor in my level of play,” he confirms. “I didn't know I was going to play almost 40 minutes. Starting the season, I thought I was the fourth option. At the end of the season, I was first or second. The teams started to adjust to me and things were more difficult for me. I think the fatigue was important in certain matches during which I was not good. Being better physically will help me take a new step. »
What would this new course be for the 2024/25 financial year, when we will have to confirm this good season? “It will be to become an All-Star”he announces. “Last summer, my only goal was to prove to everyone that I deserved to be in the NBA, that I could be a starter. What I want to do next season is prove that I can stay at this level and move forward, becoming an All-Star. »
