Cured of prostate cancer, Alonzo Mourning encourages men to get screened

“Life was beautiful and amazing for me, but if I had ignored getting checked and let it happen, the cancer would have spread throughout my body.” In an interview given to ESPN, Alonzo Mourning reveals that he had surgery in March for prostate cancer. Additional tests revealed the cancer had not spread, and the former Hornets and Heat midfielder was completely healed after his prostate was removed.

NBA champion after having undergone a kidney transplant at the age of 33, Alonzo Mourning is now campaigning for men aged 45 and over to undergo regular screening for prostate and colon cancer.

A taboo topic “

“What scares me about this disease is that there are so many men who feel good and who have this cancer within them without knowing it,” confides the current leader of the Heat. “Unfortunately, as men we don't like going to the doctor, but it's the only way to know what's going on in our bodies. Prostate cancer and even colon cancer are silent killers and many men are not diagnosed until it is too late. »

For Alonzo Mourning, it would even be “taboo for men to talk about health problems”. “If I hadn't had routine checks, I probably wouldn't be here talking about it. I want men to be proactive about their health » he demands.
