Rather in the register of a scoring leader, Tyrese Maxey speaks more about his sense of passing, or rather his altruism outside the court. The Sixers leader is one of the rare players to have won the NBA Cares Community Award, which rewards the player with the most remarkable charitable gesture at the start of his career.
In November 2022, for its third season, Tyrese Maxey notably, through his foundation, offered 300 Thanksgiving meals to families in need in Philadelphia. A generosity inherited from his grandmother Mildred, known as “Mimi”, whom he considers a model.
In his childhood, Tyrese Maxey did not play video games, or even basketball, mainly with his friends, but with his grandmother, with whom he shared a very strong bond. “ She would come outside with me and take the rebound while I was making shots » he remembers in an article on Andscape. “ She was playing the console with me. She was that kind of grandmother. She would have done anything for me. »
Tyrese Maxey, distributor of smiles
“Mimi” Maxey greatly inspired her grandson with her character, distributing food to the homeless around the family home in Garland, Texas. “ I always told people that she was an angel from heaven. She was the kindest woman the world has ever known. She always had a beautiful smile and she gave people food. »
The kind of portrait that could be drawn today of Tyrese Maxey, one of the most sunny and expressive players in the league. “ I have always been a happy child. She told me to never lose this joy. That I brought smiles to those around me and that I should never stop doing that. To always be myself, to never let anything change who I am. As long as I did that, she was happy. »
“She would be proud of the person I am”
Died shortly before Tyrese's arrival in the NBA, while the Draft had been postponed to November 2020 due to Covid-19, Mimi Maxey nonetheless retained a primordial place in the Sixer's career.
The night of the Draft, his family had left an empty chair around the table, as if he were there. And through his meal distributions, his basketball camps organized in Philadelphia, in his native Texas, or in Lexington, not far from the Kentucky campus where he trained at the university, the leader perpetuates the legacy of his Grandmother.
“ The biggest lesson she taught me was to treat people the way you want them to treat you » assures Tyrese Maxey. And the player voted best progress of the season assures him, he is not about to change this trait of his personality. “ She would be proud of the person I am. I always try to help others and have a smile that brightens the environment around me. I certainly wouldn't change that. »
