Jared Goff: “Being sent to the Lions was the best thing of my life”

Who really believed, in 2021, that the arrival of Jared Goff in Detroit heralded a bright future for both the franchise and the quarterback?

At the time, Goff was considered a first draft pick who had failed to reach the elite, and who did not allow the Rams to reach the Holy Grail. He was coming off an ordinary season with 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in an attack led by Sean McVay.

In 2022, Los Angeles even justified its bet by winning the Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford, while Detroit won three games.

However, in 2024, the situation seems reversed. It is the Lions who are coming out of a conference final and who have the biggest ambitions. Goff is coming off two very solid seasons.

And he found his confidence again.

“Looking back, being sent to the Lions was the best thing that ever happened to me, both for my career and my development as a man,” Goff explained on the Trading Cards podcast.

Jared Goff has reached his potential

Expected in the Draft, Jared Goff sometimes disappointed afterwards. And it was when he was abandoned that he revived.

“Being sent to die in a hole, because that's what most people thought…I didn't want to let that happen. I was fortunate to have a lot of good coaches and players in Detroit to support me and help me reach my potential. »

In the end, the trade between the Rams and Lions appears to have benefited everyone.

Los Angeles has its title. Detroit tried a gamble which paid off. Goff, but also the Draft choices (often used for exchanges) received in the transaction revived Detroit.

At 29, Jared Goff is entering the final year of his contract. After beating the odds, the next question is to see if the Lions will trust him in the long term.
