Went from 19 points to 44% on shots including 38% at 3-points during the month of January, to 10 points at 35% on shots including 34% at 3-points in February, Tim Hardaway Jr. still does not raise its head in March. Quite the contrary: 6 points at 27% on shots including 26% at 3-points…
“My job is to put the guys in who can help us win.” Jason Kidd justifies himself. “But we don’t turn our backs on people in difficulty. Timmy is in trouble. We know it. Our job is to find him open shots, easy shots. But the opponents don't let him shoot. »
Extended in 2021 for four more years at $75 million, Tim Hardaway Jr. is quite simply the teammate who has played the most minutes with Luka Doncic in the current Mavs squad. But listening to Jason Kidd, clumsiness is not the only problem with his fullback/winger.
Weighed down by his defense
“Very often, we only look at tactics but there are things that can happen off the field”explains Jason Kidd in The Athletic. “We are all humans. We've all had difficult times playing basketball as a professional. Even in life, we have downs. We trust him and we need him if we want to win the title. »
In his sixth season in Texas, THJ has seen more. And yet, he averages 29 minutes or more in his career with the Mavs. But not anymore these days! Since the two exchanges which brought in Daniel Gafford (from Washington) and especially PJ Washington (from Charlotte) in this case.
In the midst of a crisis of confidence in shooting, he pays for his defensive wanderings, and his somewhat one-dimensional role as a pure shooter. “When you don’t make your shots, you have to ask yourself how you can make saves” recalls Jason Kidd.
An uncertain future
Result: the Mavericks coach prefers to trust PJ Washington, but also Josh Green, Dante Exum and Derrick Jones Jr, all more armed defensively within a team in difficulty in the field.
Another element that can weigh on his bad luck is uncertainty about his future. He only has one guaranteed season left on his contract, and the veteran knows that his managers tried to trade him, without finding a buyer. “To be honest, I didn’t know if I was still going to be here,” he admitted at the start of the season.
While the Mavs are going through a bad patch with five defeats in six games, Tim Hardaway Jr. will have to fight if he wants to regain his place in Jason Kidd's rotation, and the plans of his new leaders.
