The Ravens defensive coordinator has been chosen by the Seahawks to become the franchise's next coach.
The Seahawks have found their head coach. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network announced this Wednesday that Seattle will give the job to Mike Macdonald, the defensive coordinator of the Ravens. The information was also announced by Adam Schefter of ESPN. After 14 years under the leadership of Pete Carroll, the Washington franchise will remain under the command of a defensive specialist. Macdonald was a favorite for the position.
At 36, the now ex-Raven obtained his first position as general coach. He will become the youngest in this position in the league. He was chosen after having an initial interview with the franchise on Monday. According to Rapoport, the Seahawkswere willing to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire him.
Over his two seasons as Baltimore's defensive coordinator, the Ravens finished 3rd and 1st in points allowed and 9th and 6th in yards allowed, respectively. Seattle was able to appreciate Baltimore's defensive solidity during a rout inflicted in the regular season. If Baltimore is going to have to find a defensive coordinator of his caliber, Macdonald will have his work cut out to save an Osprey defensive squad that has been in the 10 worst in the league for two years. In attack, he will have to form his opinion on the Geno Smith case. With pick number 16, Seattle could target a young quarterback or try to strengthen its defense.
The Commanders are now the only team in the league without a coach. Washington will have to find a way to get back on its feet. Mike Macdonald interested them and they missed the boat on Ben Johnson who remained in Detroit. Among the prestigious names available, Dan Quinn and Bill Belichick remain in particular.
