New New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy suffered a first setback at the helm of his new team, losing 3-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.
Trailing by two goals after 40 minutes, the Islanders tried everything in the final third, but failed to tie the game and despite a total of 43 shots against Adin Hill’s net.
Roy saw his former player with the Quebec Remparts Jonathan Marchessault get an assist on Nicolas Roy’s goal, who scored his ninth of the season, in addition to collecting an assist.
The Golden Knights scored two goals in 1:49 of each other to take a 3-1 lead in the second period.
On the power play, Sheldon Rempal scored the first goal of his career, having made his NHL debut on October 18, 2018. Between the two dates, Rempal played a total of 15 games in five seasons. He also played for the Carolina Hurricanes and Vavcouver Canucks before joining the Golden Knights.
Rempal is the fourth Vegas player to score a first career goal during the season.
Ivan Barbashev got the other goal for the Golden Knights.
For the Islanders, Brock Nelson scored his 21st of the campaign while Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored his team’s second goal in the defeat during a numerical disadvantage at 9:26 of the third. It was Pageau’s 20th career goal in a shorthanded situation.
With his goal, Nelson earned his 500th career point, all with the Islanders.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin gave up three times on 27 shots in front of the Islanders cage.
The Islanders had three power plays in the third period, but couldn’t tie the score.
The Stars have the last word
Roope Hintz scored two goals and the Dallas Stars beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4.
It was only the Red Wings’ second regulation-time loss in their last 10 games.
Jamie Benn, Mason Marchment and Esa Lindell also scored for the Stars, who beat the Red Wings for the seventh straight time. Wyatt Johnston had three assists.
David Perron, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin and JT Compher scored in the loss.
Jake Oettinger blocked 30 shots for the Stars. For the Red Wings, Alex Lyon and James Reimer stopped a total of 33 shots.
Benn opened the scoring after 3:24 of play, on the power play.
The Red Wings tied the game, then DeBrincat scored his 18th goal of the season, on the power play, to make it 2-1 with 3:07 remaining in the first period.
With just 22 seconds remaining in the period, Marchment received Matt Duchene’s pass and tied the score at 2-2.
Hintz gave the Stars a 5-2 lead by scoring his 22nd goal of the campaign.
The Wild resist the Capitals
Marcus Johansson scored two goals against his former team and the Minnesota Wild defeated the Washington Capitals 5-3.
Eleven different players had at least one point for the Wild, including Joel Eriksson Ek and Marcus Foligno, who finished the game with a goal and an assist.
Rookie defenseman Brock Faber also lit the red light for the Wild, who have won four of their last five games after losing eight of the previous nine. Filip Gustavsson made 31 saves to sign a third consecutive victory.
Anthony Mantha scored two goals for the Capitals, who have lost four of their last seven games. TJ Oshie also scored in the loss.
Darcy Kuemper stopped 25 pucks for Washington, who scored more than two goals for only the third time in seven games. Blanked in St. Louis on Saturday, the Capitals began the duel against the Wild with a goals scored average of 2.34, the third worst average in the NHL.
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin failed to find the back of the net for a seventh straight game. He had collected 37 points, including 19 goals, in 22 career games against the Wild.
Saad stuns the Flames at 19:12
Brandon Saad’s second goal of the night, with 48 seconds left in the third period, propelled the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.
The Blues, who had never had the lead in the match until then, thus capped a two-goal comeback, having trailed 3-1 late in the second period.
Saad, who now has 13 goals on his record, moved into Flames territory and fired a wrist shot that found its way between the legs of Noah Hanifin, before hitting the ice, ricocheting off the left post and end up behind Jacob Markstrom.
Mackenzie Weegar, Hanifin and Yegor Sharangovich scored for Calgary, which is 1-3-0 since the start of a six-game homestand.
St. Louis captain Brayden Schenn helped turn the tide at 17:13 of the second, when he didn’t miss his chance on a short-handed breakaway.
The equalizing goal was scored by Jordan Kyrou in the seventh minute of play in the final third.
Markstrom was on duty after missing a week of activities with a lower-body injury. He faced 26 shots, while his opposite number Jordan Binnington was tested 35 times.
