No one is stopping the Edmonton Oilers these days, not even their eternal rivals in Calgary.
The Oilers defeated the Flames 2-1 on Saturday night to extend their winning streak to 13. Edmonton is still perfect in 2024 and the team hasn’t suffered a setback since January 19.
In the win, captain Connor McDavid was unable to muster a point to extend his consecutive game point streak to 13.
Ryan McLeod scored with a spectacular play, while Sam Gagner scored the winning goal in the third period. Zach Hyman completed the score in an empty net and Mackenzie Weeger was the author of the only goal for the Flames, who suffered a second defeat in a row.
Calgary goaltender Dan Vladar had a busy night and faced 32 shots. At the other end of the ice, Stuart Skinner’s 26 saves allowed him to obtain a 10th victory in a row.
After a few good saves, Vladar finally gave up for the first time with just under five minutes left in the first period. Entering the zone, McLeod made a spectacular move to pass the puck between his legs, before cleverly placing the puck behind Vladar to open the scoring.
The Flames’ response came quickly in the middle period. On a three-on-one counterattack, Weegar took advantage of a nice lift pass from Blake Coleman to push the puck into the back of the net and tie the game 1-1.
Edmonton then played lucky in the early moments of the third period to regain control. From behind the net, Sam Gagner headed a puck in front of the net, but the puck deflected off Rasmus Andersson’s stick, before hitting Vladar’s back and ending up in the back of the net.
The Flames tried to tie the game late in the game by removing Vladar in favor of a sixth player, but without success.
The Oilers will return to action against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, while the Flames will face the St. Louis Blues.
