Mets: David Stearns has a budget of $10 million for the rest of the winter

Since the arrival of Steve Cohen at the helm of the New York Mets, they have accustomed us to staggering salary expenses, with the 2023 season reaching new heights.

However, following the Big Apple's training setbacks, things have changed (for the moment).

Indeed, during a broadcast of Put Hot Stove on SNY, Andy Martino said the Mets have about ten million dollars to spend for the rest of the winter.

Of course, knowing Cohen, it remains to be seen to what extent the budget of around ten million dollars will be respected to the letter. Given the owner's deep pockets, some flexibility could be offered if the opportunity to provide significant roster help is too good.

Still according to the journalist, the priority will be to add depth in the relief pen behind Edwin Diaz and Luke Raley.

What is a priority is relief pitchers, they will strengthen the bullpen before or at the start of spring camp. Making additions to the offensive lineup is not a priority.

After these assertions, it is therefore difficult to think that the representatives of Queens will be in the dance in order to acquire the services of JD Martinez or Justin Turner, they who also wanted to obtain reinforcement at the third base and at the position of hitter of choice.

Even at 36 years old, Martinez is expected to get a deal worth twenty million dollars, which far exceeds what President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has left in the coffers.

For his part, Turner is expected to sign a contract worth around sixteen million dollars, which is once again above the threshold established by Cohen.

The Mets could therefore fall back on relievers Brent Suter and Wandy Peralta, with whom discussions have already taken place.
