The New York Mets were expected to have interest in Luis Severino, who knows the New York market well.
Well, there it is: Severino took advantage of his autonomy to change his uniform while remaining in New York. He signed a one-year contract valued at $13 million.
Does it feel weird seeing him across town? Certainly. It’s like Noah Syndergaard was playing in the Bronx.

At the same time, the Mets need starters so badly that it makes sense to think that taking a chance on Severino, at that price, is a good idea for a rich owner.
Note that this does not remove the Mets from the race for big starters, including Yoshinobu Yamamoto. David Stearns wants to get his hands on the Japanese, that’s clear.
If Severino has a good season, he can become a strong free agent again. So it’s a good bet on his side at that level. And he knows the city…
And otherwise? We’ll see in a year.
