On Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-1 to win their third game in a row.
David Perron scored twice in the third quarter to bring his tally of goals to 300. He is the sixth player selected in the 2007 auction—which Patrick Kane dominated—to reach this plateau. The St. Louis Blues selected Perron 26th overall in that year’s draft.
Four of the Quebecer’s seven goals this season have come in similar situations, demonstrating his continued success in this area of the game. He scored twice on the massive attack today.
“Getting these two goals was fantastic; we played the right way and were rewarded for our efforts. After winning, Perron retorted, “We score on the numerical advantage, but more importantly, we create momentum.”
Perron is the only player in the NHL who is still playing and the 36th player born in Quebec to reach the 300-goal milestone.
Shayne Gostisbehere finished a four-point day, with three assists and a goal that completed the scoring into an empty net with 23 seconds left in the game. Dylan Larkin scored the other goal in the victory, returning to form after a training break yesterday.
Like the Montreal Canadiens, the Red Wings are using three goalies this season, a system that is currently working quite well. Coming back from a shutout against the New Jersey Devils, Alex Lyon got the start and stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced.
On the other side, the Wild continues its slide with a seventh defeat in a row.
Joel Eriksson Ek responded with his 10th of the season, while Filip Gustavsson made 19 saves.
Jake Walman was once again missing from the Detroit clan, after missing the last match in Boston. The 27-year-old defenseman is still dealing with the effects of a collision against the net that occurred during the team’s trip to Sweden, against the Maple Leafs, on November 17.
The Hawks nailed to the ground against the Blues
After a surprising victory Friday against the Maple Leafs, the Chicago Blackhawks fell back into their bad habits against the St. Louis Blues by suffering a sixth defeat in seven games with a score of 4 to 2.
Connor Bedard was held off the scoresheet for the first time in five games in the loss. Chicago is still trying to win two games in a row this season.
The Blues took advantage of the opponent’s slow start to the match. Jake Neighbors sped alone against the goalie, before going with a backhand shot that beat the latter at 3:21 of play in the first period. Neighbors’ sixth goal of the season was also their fourth in five games.
Just over two minutes later, Hayes beat Soderblom over the right shoulder.
After Donato’s goal cut the lead to 2-1, Buchnevich scored on the power play for the Blues with 2:58 left in the first period.
The Blackhawks worked hard in the first half of the third period, but were unable to score. Neighbors then scored their second goal of the game, with 6:08 left in regulation.
Buchnevich completed the game with three points. Robert Thomas and Torey Krug added two assists to their personal record.
Even though the Blues quickly closed the game in front of the Hawks’ modest attack, Jordan Binnington stood out with 32 saves to earn the victory.
His opposite number, Arvid Soderblom, conceded four times out of the 28 shots aimed at him. Boris Katchouk completed the scoring in the final moments of the match with his 1er goal of the season.
Hurricanes comeback against Columbus
Andrei Svechnikov scored with 1:55 remaining in the third period, capping a two-goal comeback by the Carolina Hurricanes that resulted in a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.
Svechnikov’s goal was the Hurricanes’ third in a span of 8:04. Former Montreal Canadiens forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Brady Skjei scored before Svechnikov, who also had an assist.
After two scoreless periods, the Jackets opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the third, courtesy of Kirill Marchenko. Johnny Gaudreau scored the visitors’ other goal.
Pyotr Kochetkov made 21 saves. He got a third start in four games in front of the Hurricanes cage, while Frederik Andersen is dealing with blood clotting problems.
At the other end of the ice, Elvis Merzlikins faced 43 pucks.
The Blue Jackets will host the Boston Bruins on Monday. The next day, the Hurricanes will be in Philadelphia to face the Flyers.
