The Cubs would be willing to pay a lot for Pete Alonso

Even though New York Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns repeatedly proclaimed during the off-season that he expected Pete Alonso to be in his position at the start of next camp. spring, we’ll believe it when we see it.

He would not be the first leader to spew a bunch of falsehoods in the public square. We salute Brian Cashman as we pass.

If Stearns’ nose lengthens and the big slugger lands on the trade market, the Chicago Cubs will come running.

And the Bears are willing to pay top dollar to get their hands on the first baseman.

Indeed, according to what sources close to the matter told Jesse Rogers of the ESPN network, the Cubs would use Christopher Morel as the centerpiece of a possible transaction if the Mets make Alonso available to other MLB teams.

This would be a good basis for a swap between the two teams, since the 24-year-old had a good season in terms of power in 2023, hitting for a batting average of .247 with 26 home runs in 107 matches.

Additionally, Morel is under team control until at least 2027, which proves an important element in negotiations.

It is true that the fact that Morel does not really have a designated position, that he is not a hidden wonder on defense and that he has acted as the hitter of choice half the time this season could weigh in the balance, but in any case, the latter would not be the only piece of a potential exchange.

Whatever Stearns says, this will be a file to follow in the coming weeks.
