Zach Wilson is struggling, but so are the Giants’ offense and special teams. The Jets are in the positive. And it’s miraculous!
New York Giants (2-6) – New York Jets (4-3): 10-13 after overtime
Victory for the Jets in the rain, marked by Zach Wilson’s new struggle, and the setbacks of the Giants’ special teams. In particular kicker Graham Gano (1/3), who was unable to give his team a victory.
In a defensive encounter, the combination between the two teams is not something to dream of. 24 punts, as many first attempts, 445 yards, 4/34 on 3rd attempts, and 8 sacks conceded. 2.8 yards per play for the Giants, 4 for the Jets. Finally, 15 penalties.
Under pressure 9 times, Zach Wilson never knew how to move his team forward. Fortunately, he was able to count on the help of Breece Hall and the entire Jets defense.
It’s worse on the Giants side. Deprived of their two starting tackles, Tyrod Taylor suffered 2 sacks, and then 8 pressures. To add to his woes, he was taken to hospital after suffering a shock to his ribs.
Replaced by Tommy DeVito, the quarterback managed to lead his team to a touchdown despite the low number of completed passes (6). The defense thought it had finished the job, without taking into account the failure of the special teams.
Breece Hall’s Flash
The first period between the two teams was absolutely poor. In total, we have 15 punts, 2 fumbles, 1 missed field goal. But above all, 0 third attempts converted out of 18. In the middle of this nothingness, Breece Hall (12 races, 17 yards – 6 REC, 76 yards, TD) appears out of nowhere for a 58-yard touchdown. The only flash of a very poor match.
For the Giants, nothing is going well with the injury to Tyrod Taylor, who was hit in the ribs. A statistic that will not help the Giants’ aerial problems: 8, like the number of passing yards gained over this period. An NFL record since 1950.
The Jet miracle
With Taylor’s injury, the Giants’ strategy is simple. Run, run, run. At the end of this series which would appeal to running game purists, Tommy DeVito (2/7, 11 yards, TD) reached the promised land for his first career touchdown. That’s all that needs to be remembered from a 2nd period where the defenses were in great shape.
Until this last minute when after a new sack on Zach Wilson from a Kayvon Thibodeaux (3 sacks) in great form, the Jets thought they had lost the match. But, the miracle produced by Graham Gano, and the first attempt won by Allen Lazard (3 REC, 45 yards) allowed Greg Zurlein to equalize.
In overtime, a foul from Adoree Jackson in her 20 yards allowed Greg Zurlein to snatch the victory. And that’s all there was to remember. The other good news is that the Jets are moving into the positive, and we still wonder how they did it.
