The Mavericks need to put more effort into rebounding

With only 38.8 rebounds taken on average last season, the Mavericks were quite simply the worst team in the league in this area, recovering only 47.1% of missed shots. It is therefore an obvious area of progress if the Texan franchise wants – no pun intended – to bounce back and return to the playoffs this season.

Summer recruit, Grant Williams, who comes from the Celtics, seventh best rebounding team in 2023/24, arrives in Dallas to change the situation.

“We have a lot of energy, and so that’s not the problem“, he analyzes for official franchise website. “It’s about us being physical, putting our bodies in opposition. We don’t care if we make a mistake, we have to play with maximum physical intensity and hardness. »

All the Mavericks are requisitioned for the rebound

Are the Texans, who suffered on defense last season, capable of it? Does this team have the muscles and the desire to block rebounds?

“We talked about defense and rebounding but the fight starts even earlier: when the shot is taken. You have to be physical,” announces Jason Kidd. “We can’t just rely on our athletic qualities, especially with the number of 3-point shots attempted per game. We always think that it’s the big guys who take care of the rebound, but it’s up to everyone to participate. The outsiders and wingers must help. The five players must go for the rebound, believe in it. We have a group that can be good in this area. »

The rebounding burden should no longer fall solely on Grant Williams, Derek Lively II and other Mavericks interiors. The outsiders must help, even if this sometimes results in mistakes. Tim Hardaway Jr. got the message.

“You have to be tenacious, you have to make the effort, have a little luck too, be in the right place at the right time. Most of the time, it’s about helping the grown-ups,” lists the Texan shooter. “We will have to be physical, pushing opponents away with little pushes from the back. We have to get there. Referees can’t see everything. If we are aggressive, if we physically dominate our opponents, there will be no whistles. Officials will reward those who give of themselves. »
