New York Giants (2-5) – Washington Commanders (3-4): 14 – 7
First divisional duel between the Giants and Commanders at MetLife Stadium. The Commanders could switch to the positive, and live up to the Cowboys and the Eagles. Unfortunately, Ron Rivera’s men scuttled themselves, especially in the first period.
Still, the Giants did everything they could to try not to win the game. The last offensive series, where the Giants had to run instead of kneeling on the ground, almost turned into a disaster. The main thing is that New York gets back on track with difficulty thanks to its defense (6 sacks, 12 pressures), while Washington misses an opportunity to definitively crush its rival.
Giants finally giants
Premiere night in New York. Event which occurs in the 2nd quarter, which sees the Giants score the first points of the match. First touchdown in the first half of the season. First touchdown for Darren Waller (7 REC, 98 yards, 1 TD) who is celebrating National Tight Ends Day celebrated by the NFL. Finally, first passing touchdown of the season for Tyrod Taylor (18/29, 279 yards, 2 TDs), the replacement for Daniel Jones. Also a first for rookie Deonte Banks. The cornerback intercepts Sam Howell (22/42, 249 yards, INT). An interception enhanced by star running back Saquon Barkley (21 races, 77 yards – 3 REC, 41 yards, 1 TD).
The Giants simply dominated this first period. Opposite, no 3rd attempt converted, 7 punts, 5 sacks conceded, 4 penalties and therefore, an interception. Finally, only 46 yards covered, in a first period to forget for the franchise from the federal capital. Symbol of this first period: receiver Terry McLaurin (6 REC, 90 yards). Targeted only once, for no reception.
Washington too short
The second period starts badly for the Commanders with another punt. But, the Giants will have the (bad) idea of relaunching them. A punt flouted by Sterling Shepard is converted into a touchdown by Brian Robinson Jr (8 races, 23 yards, TD).
This touchdown will not benefit the Commanders, who do not benefit from the sometimes hesitant play calls of the Giants offensive staff. In addition, Joel Slye sees his penalty blocked by Leonard Williams. So the Giants could have closed out the game. But, Saquon Barkley commits an unusual fumble. Fortunately for him, neither Sam Howell nor Jahan Dotson (5 REC, 43 yards) are going to go to the promised land, to snatch extension.
