DJ Reed (Jets): “We can be a historic defense”

The Jets are always aiming higher. DJ Reed even wants to go down in history.

The Jets’ offense has been in the spotlight all summer. Normal when a quadruple MVP arrives.

But it’s not just Aaron Rodgers who can win the greens in 2023. Last season, the defense largely carried the franchise to 7 wins despite a rather complicated situation at the quarterback position.

The Jets finished 2022 in 4th place in the league in yards received. Same thing on the authorized points.

If we are to believe DJ Reed, the New York squad thinks they can raise their game even further this year to join the great defenses in NFL history.

“I’m very confident,” Reed told ESPN. “I think we have the potential to be the best defense in the NFL. Honestly, I think we can be historic, not just the best defense in the league. I think we can be a historic defense like the Bears of 85-86 or the Legion of Boom in 2013. We can be that dominant if we do the right thing. »

“I think we have a small window. With a team like that, with a great defense, a Hall of Famer quarterback, a well-built squad, you have to take advantage of it because these teams don’t come every year. With the cap, and the guys wanting to get paid, etc, etc. So we have to maximize the opportunity now. »

Familiarity with the Bears of 1985, the Ravens of 2000, the Buccaneers of 2002, or the Seahawks of 2013… The challenge is immense.

Chicago 1985 is 12.4 points allowed per game in the regular season, and only 10 points allowed cumulatively over three playoff games! Baltimore went even stronger statistically in 2000, scoring just 10.3 points for opponents.

In an increasingly offensive NFL, the 18.6 points allowed on average by the Jets is already a high mark. But DJ Reed therefore decided to aim higher. Which would allow Aaron Rodgers and the attack to be even more comfortable. The recipe to go to the end?
