This season, Kyle Schwarber has 35 homers. He’s sitting well in fourth in the MLB and third in the National in that regard.
Is it good? Obviously. But does that make him the most indispensable player on the circuit? Not necessarily, no.
In fact, if we base ourselves on the WAR, a statistic that compares the contribution in victories of a player compared to the average, we notice that the Phillies outfielder is in the red.
In other words, if Schwarber had been replaced every day by an average player, the Phillies would have had a better chance of winning.
Special, isn’t it?
He is currently at -0.3 (we judge that he cost his club 0.3 gain, therefore) and he could become the 14th player in MLB history to have at least 30 home runs and a negative WAR.
What you need to know is that when Schwarber does not hit a home run, he does not bring much. And since 430 of his 465 at-bats have ended in home runs alone…
In fact, the player has an average of .187 having put the ball in a safe place only 87 times this year. He only has 36 singles in all.
In five months, it’s an average of seven per month, so less than two per week.
In addition to being an ugly outfielder defensively speaking, he already has 165 strikeouts since the start of the year. That’s 165 times it didn’t generate anything.
During the entire 1990s, Tony Gwynn had 188. Think about that to put things into perspective a bit.
This means that apart from hitting home runs, Scharber does nothing. But it only takes two or three big hits at the end of the season or in the playoffs to make him a legend…
