After LeBron James, Larry Nance Jr. and TJ McConnell, it’s the turn of Steve Kerr to invest in European football. A football fan for many years, the Warriors coach has joined the capital of the Spanish football club RCD Mallorca, following a reorganization at the head of the club.
Last month, former tennis player Andy Kohlberg bought out all of the shares belonging to his longtime associate Robert Sarver, with whom he was also co-owner of the Suns, in order to take full control.
Alongside Steve Nash, still a minority shareholder, he then teamed up with new investors, including Steve Kerr.
“Andy Kohlberg and I have been friends for many years. We were together this summer, and he told me there was a change in the ownership group and he offered me to be part of the new investment group.“, he summarized. “I was very excited, because I had attended a match in Mallorca last summer, followed the team and had become a fan. It was a really exciting opportunity and I jumped at the chance”.
Steve Kerr enjoyed the experience so much when he first came to the island last summer that he delivered a motivational speech to the first-team players. This new status will allow him to continue to invest in this project and live the experience to the fullest.
“By becoming a Mallorca fan last year and now getting involved in the team, I’m going to watch La Liga games all year round! ” he added. “It’s so exciting to not just have a financial interest, but what it really means to put your heart into it and be part of the team. The most important thing is the culture of the team on a daily basis. Are everyone heading in the same direction? Does everyone support each other? Are you looking forward to coming to training every day? To see your teammates, to see your coaches? I know it’s a culture that has been instilled in Mallorca and obviously it’s paying off.”
RCD Mallorca indeed finished in a good 9th place in La Liga last season and can hope to do at least as well this season.
