What promise?
It must be said that the league had already sanctioned (loss of Draft choice) Philadelphia, a few months ago, because Daryl Morey and James Harden had agreed on his contract before the “free agency”. A prohibited practice which had allowed the team to sign PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. in stride.
Did the (almost) 34-year-old basketball player accept a financial sacrifice last summer ($14 million this season) against the promise of signing a big, long-term contract this summer? That’s what many imagined, and if that’s why he called Daryl Morey a “liar,” the Sixers could be in big trouble.
According to The AthleticJames Harden, however, explained to the NBA that this was not the reason for his anger.
More interesting option for the Sixers
The 2018 MVP thus assured the league that Daryl Morey had simply promised to transfer him “quickly” when he activated his “player option” at $35.6 million. The problem is that, almost two months later, no trade has taken place and the Sixers are now considering retaining their playmaker instead.
What happened ? According to Brian Windhorst, of ESPN, the problem is that the Sixers’ only option would have been a triangle trade sending James Harden to the Clippers, in order to get their hands on Damian Lillard. Except that the club was not ready to let go of Tyrese Maxey at the Blazers, nor to recover certain contracts demanded by Los Angeles.
Under these conditions, the Californian franchise would have ended the discussions, which would have deprived Philadelphia of its only viable option. Hence the current blockade, and the anger of James Harden…
