Cam Thomas highlights the importance of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to his career

If we look closely at the past season of cam thomasnot always exciting because filled with matches on the bench and few minutes, there was a parenthesis, in the form of a shooting star.

Indeed, between February 4 and 7, the rear of Brooklyn will chain three games in a row to more than 40 points! Proof that this is a highlight in this 2022/2023 campaign, like an eruption, these simple three meetings represent more than 20% of the points scored by Thomas throughout his season!

“I had to be ready at that time,” does he remember for Gilbert Arenas Podcast. “We were in the middle of a transition, with the end of the superteam and the departure of Kyrie Irving, then that of Kevin Durant two days later. So I figured the Nets would have to play me now. Irving wasn’t there, Durant wasn’t either so I was going to go in there and kill it all. »

But the players exchanged for the two stars, Spencer Dinwiddie, Cam Johnson and especially Mikal Bridges, will obviously arrive and take control of the team. Cam Thomas then finds his role as a substitute, who is content with the crumbs.

Even if the departure of the two stars allowed the rear to shine punctually, the latter did not forget the advice he received from the two champions.

“They taught me everything. My first season, Durant told me to always get closer to the basket because I often had a tendency to start by taking shots from mid-range, when you have to go to the circle. So he told me to start inside. Kevin has an old-school game: shots near the basket, mid-distance and finally 3-pts. That was the gist of what he told me. I learned a lot from Kyrie too, who has the full arsenal. They have helped me enormously since the beginning of my career. »
