After spending 14 years as an NBA assistant, Adrian Griffin was finally promoted to head coach, succeeding Mike Budenholzer in Milwaukee. A big adjustment for the technician who has spent the last four seasons in Toronto, and he intends to rely on the Summer League to acclimatize to his new role.
How ? Adrian Griffin will simply be the coach of the Milwaukee team in Las Vegas. A choice he explained on Wednesday during a press briefing.
“There are several things. First, there is a new staff arriving, and it is important that we can all be on the same wavelength., did he declare. “I thought it would be good for everyone if I came on the pitch too, and showed the style of play that I want. It’s a little different. Defensively, you will have to be on the ball, in attack too, there are certain things that I would like to incorporate. And then, I wanted to be able to know the players a little more. They’ve been great in training so far. I thought it would be a good idea, to bring everyone together and push in the same direction”.
A team he wants to see in his image
Adrian Griffin highlighted the contribution of Sidney Hobner, the first assistant in the history of the franchise, and he also had a word for Joe Prunty and Terry Stotts, his two luxury assistants who have played in the NBA for more than 25 years.
“One of the reasons I wanted them on my staff is because they know more than me! (laughs). So I learn alongside them. They have always been in the NBA, their experience speaks for them. We had very good discussions. I also allow them to coach. Our relationship is very good”.
While he will have the opportunity to lead his son, Alan Griffin, but also the Frenchman Hugo Besson, Nico Mannion or Tacko Fall, the coach has revealed the style he wants to put in place for his team, with values in the image of the player he was.
“We want to be the toughest team in the Summer League, the most physical”he pointed out. “That’s the beauty of this game. When you play hard, and you play together, good things happen. You know, I played nine years in the NBA, and I shot 4 points per game. But I was playing extremely hard, trying to help my team win, and good things happened to me. I told the players that I had two jobs in the NBA thanks to the Summer League. So I believe in that, and I believe in them.”
Milwaukee plays its first Summer League game on Friday against Denver.
