It was an expected decision, given the season of Knicks. Left on the bench for the rest of the campaign at the beginning of December, when Tom Thibodeau had finally found the right formula in his rotations, Derrick Rose finds himself a protected free agent. Knicks management has decided not to activate the “team option” for the third and final year of his contract, reports The Athletic.
The 2011 MVP, after a very discreet season (27 games for 13 minutes on average), will therefore not receive the 15.6 million dollars of his last year of contract, and can now sign wherever he wants.
A role to play in a top team
As our colleagues point out, “D-Rose” could very well return to New York by signing a contract at a lower price, but this option remains quite unlikely since the rotation of the Knicks is now well established on the point guard position (Jalen Brunson, Immanuel Quickley and Miles McBride). Especially since at almost 35 years old, Derrick Rose no longer has a lot of time in front of him if he wants, one last time, to play an important role off the bench. A role that the Knicks can no longer offer him today.
From now on, Derrick Rose will listen to the offers, which should not be missing from the playoff teams or from the top of the table. Coming off the bench on small sequences, “Pooh” can still render some services.
