Ultimately, the Celtics, Wizards and Clippers failed to find common ground for the transfer of Kristaps Porzingis, and Boston switched partners to bring the Latvian back into its roster. Thus, it is no longer Malcolm Brogdon who packs his bags for the Clippers, but Marcus Smart heading to Memphis !!!
We thought he was forever linked to the Celtics, but Smart will therefore play nannies for Ja Morant in Memphis, and above all act as interim leader while waiting for the end of his 25-game suspension. Boston still receives Kristaps Porzingis, from the Wizards, while Tyus Jones takes the direction of Washington. He is accompanied by Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala, while the Grizzlies drop two first rounds of the Draft in Boston, including their 25th choice of the 2023 Draft.
Boston therefore chooses to sacrifice Smart, former best defender in the NBA, and attack the next season with Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon at the back. Maybe that will entice Payton Pritchard to stay. A strong, even curious choice, as Smart had embodied Celtics basketball for several seasons.
As for Smart, he will be like a fish in water in Grizzlies basketball, and his association with Jaren Jackson Jr will further densify the home defense.
