At the Wizards, the exit door is open for those who want to win right away

New president of the Wizards for a few days, Michael Winger has already made two strong decisions by appointing Travis Schlenk as vice-president and Will Dawkins as GM.

A few years after a first major project, carried out in 2019, the Wizards are therefore resuming major work and, according to The AthleticTed Leonsis, the owner of the franchise, has given full powers to its new president to redesign the workforce and change, if necessary, the people at the helm.

“The raw and unfiltered truth is that I haven’t yet developed the immediate vision for the franchise”he explains. “There are a lot of talented and characterful players in this team. I want to get to know them a little. Building a team isn’t just about the pitch, it’s not just about statistics. There are also human aspects and I have to understand things before implementing an action plan. »

The president has important files to manage on the table, in particular those of Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma, who could test the market this summer. If the two players stay, they will again form the backbone of the team with Bradley Beal, the star of the group.

“If they prefer to win straight away, they will probably have to do it elsewhere”

But the leader warns that, despite this attractive trio on paper, patience will be required for a team that comes out of two seasons with only 35 wins and without qualifying for the playoffs.

“I am asked the question of whether I will trade or keep Beal. I don’t know, I would like to meet him. Same question with Porzingis and Kuzma. I don’t know. They have the power to choose, like Beal. I want to get to know them. If the visions agree to be competitive and do things right with a little patience, there is definitely a path to follow with them” he details as well.

And if not?

“I am convinced that we will not be a candidate for the title overnight. So if they’d rather win right away, they’ll probably have to do it somewhere else.” bluntly announces Michael Winger. “But the dialogue is open and it’s an invitation to talk about the future of the team, the short-term one and the long-term one, to see if the objectives align and where they don’t align. »
