Interview Walker Kessler: “Rudy Gobert often gave me advice”

After Benedict Mathurin in Game 1, it’s Jazz pivot Walker Kessler’s turn to take on the role of special correspondent for the NBA in Game 2 of the 2023 Finals. Paolo Banchero and Jalen Williams will take over in Miami for Games 3 and 4.

Walker Kessler, who had an impressive rookie campaign, finishing third in the voting for the ‘Rookie of the Year’ trophy, knows better than anyone how difficult it is to defend on Nikola Jokic. We therefore asked him his opinion on the double MVP, before talking about his relationship with Rudy Gobert.

Nikola Jokic is making historic playoffs, he started the Finals with a new triple-double, you play in the same position, can you tell us how your first duel against him went this season?

Our first game of the regular season was against Denver and against him, it was… Let’s say that I was sent to the doom from the start (he laughs)! He’s an incredible player, super talented. He can do so many things: score, pass, rebound, screen, and he’s among the best in every category. This first duel against him was a form of accelerated learning for me, it was my welcome committee in the NBA. I look forward to playing against him in the years to come.

Who do you think will win these Finals?

No no no, I don’t want to fall into the trap, I can’t make a prediction on this duel. But regardless of the end result, I think it’s going to be a great Finals and I can’t wait to be in the hall, to watch the game tomorrow (tonight), and soak up the energy and the intensity.

You arrived at Utah in the transfer that sent Rudy Gobert to Minnesota. Rudy often gave you compliments in the press, does it stop there or did he give you advice during your rookie season?

Yes. Obviously, Rudy is an incredible defender. When I was young I was a fan and I used him as an inspiration and a model in my way of defending. He was always available and open. He often gave me advice, whether on life in the NBA or on defensive situations. I can only speak highly of Rudy.

Interview in Denver.
