Veteran receiver Gary Sanchez could be recalled to the New York Mets by the end of the week.
According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the New York outfit is evaluating this option for several reasons.
First, the Mets are experiencing an offensive slump. They’ve lost seven of their last 10 games and dropped to fourth in the National League East.
Sanchez could therefore help the Mets offensively.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mets have recalled utility player Mark Vientos from their AAA school club Syracuse. The 23-year-old is successful on offense, batting .333. He is scheduled to join the team for Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Vientos has 37 RBIs in 38 games and 13 long balls. He can certainly breathe new life into the New York attack.
He could get time at third base or as a prime hitter. The second option is less plausible, however, since Daniel Vogelbach seems to be firmly established at the designated hitter position.
Receiver problem
The Mets also have an injured receiver problem.
Omar Narvaez, who was on the list of long-term injured players, must begin his rehabilitation in the coming days.
Buck Showalter’s troupe therefore relied on sensation Francisco Alvarez and Michael Perez. The latter is however not on the list of the 40 players of the team.
With Thomas Nido also injured, the Mets could be tempted to bring Gary Sanchez in favor of Michael Perez.
Recall that the 30-year-old receiver recently signed a minor league contract with the Mets.
He played seven seasons with the New York Yankees before leaving for Minnesota in 2022.
