The New York Yankees currently have the equivalent of $113 million on the injured list. It certainly does not help to be successful.
However, this is not the only explanation for the offensive failures of the Bronx Bombers.
With the exception of the series against perhaps the worst team in MLB history, the Oakland Athletics, in which they scored 28 points, the Yankees offense hasn’t had much success this season.
And even after sweeping the poor A’s, New York still ranks 23rd in batting average, 22nd in on-base attendance percentage, and 16th in OPS. The Yankees have scored three or less in 45 percent of their games this season, a disaster…
Batting coach Dillon Lawson isn’t worried, however.
We care about winning games. I don’t really care where we rank in offensive stats as long as we score enough points to win games. We played against the number one team in MLB (the Tampa Bays Rays) and we could have swept them. I’m not worried. We have to do enough to win games.
That’s one way to look at it, but the Yankees’ big guns need to do more to give pitchers some breathing room. It is the latter who hold the fort at present. The performance of the New York sticks is still worrying since the last playoffs.
Even though Aaron Judge and Harrison Bader get the job done, it’s harder for the other Yankees hitters. Lawson, however, believes that this situation will not last forever.
I don’t expect it to last for the rest of the season. There are improvements that are being made. We are doing good things as an attack. When we collect a few pieces, it will complete what we are building right now.
It is true that the loss of Giancarlo Stanton hurts a lot, he who was very successful in 2023. His return will therefore be greatly appreciated by the Yankees, since some players do not find themselves in the right chair at the moment.
In the meantime and beyond, however, some will have to raise their game a notch.
