On the edge of the abyss, the Celtics must forget the past and their certainties

The Celtics are now on the precipice, trailing 3-2 in the conference semifinals against the Sixers, with Game 6 to come in Philadelphia. Did Joe Mazzulla’s troupe think they had too much leeway to end up so close to the road exit? The confident and serene speech in any case contrasts with the situation.

After Game 4, narrowly lost in overtime, Al Horford and his comrades showed their serenity for Game 5 at home. Except that they were completely dominated this time…

Extremely clumsy (40% success in shooting including 31% from afar), disturbed by the Sixers area (6/22 against this defense) and the presence of Joel Embiid (4/15 on shots defended by the MVP), the Celtics were never able to turn that game around. But they simply plead for the hiccup.

“It was our first very, very bad playoff game. It’s not necessarily the best time for it to happen, but we just have to change our perspective and get ready to play the next game.” answers Joe Mazzullafollowed by Jayson Tatum: “We just weren’t up to it tonight.”

The angry Boston public

For the Celtics winger, as for his friend Jaylen Brown, we must quickly forget this non-match.

“We can’t do anything about what happened tonight. It happened. It is sad. We wish we could change things, but that’s not how life works. We can’t go back”continues Jayson Tatum. “We mishandled things. We couldn’t hold our duels. We couldn’t make stops when necessary. We missed a lot of open shots, we gave them everything they wanted. This is the story of this game. But you have to have a short memory” confirms Jaylen Brown.

The demanding public of TD Garden obviously did not like the general bankruptcy of his team in such an important Game 5, especially at home. The fans have booed their players several times.

Last season, the Celtics found themselves in the same situation. Led 3-2 by the Bucks, they had managed to win Game 6 in Milwaukee before finishing the homework in Game 7. But Jaylen Brown warns his comrades that they cannot simply rely on past experience.

” The past is the past. We can talk about a lot of things that happened on this show that could have gone the other way, but it didn’t.”recalls the full-back/winger. “We have a great opportunity ahead of us. Dwelling on the past would deprive us of it. Last year is last year. This year we have to be better than tonight, otherwise the ending will be different. Obviously, we’re still alive in this series, and we need to put together everything we have left to be better in Game 6.”

And find an outsider mentality, to avoid a big disappointment of favorite?
