As recently as Tuesday, we learned that Bryce Harper is progressing well towards a return to the game as a hitter of choice. As for a defensive comeback, that’s another story.
However, it might be sooner than expected. That’s because the outfielder went to see Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and then his manager Rob Thomson to convince them to play him at first base when he’s healthy.
And the skipper’s response was positive.
Go!
The purpose of Harper’s request? Get back on the pitch faster than expected. To achieve this, the latter will have to learn to play at first base. And the Phillies already have a plan for that.
At best, Harper may be able to return to the outfield in September, but if the experience is successful, he may not return this year or the next.
Either way, Harper will do everything in his power to help his team.
If I can give them what they want in first base, right field or wherever, not just this year but in the future, that gives us one more opportunity. Anything. All they want. It gives them the opportunity to do so.
After a season-ending injury to Rhys Hoskins and thumb surgery that will sideline Darick for at least two months, the idea really isn’t a bad one, and anything that can help the Phillies staying in the race will be appreciated.
