For once this season, a club was still in the game against the Tampa Bay Rays, and this, late in the game. This was the case of the Boston Red Sox last night, when they lost by a score of 9-7.
If the Red Stockings had a chance to win the duel against the Rays, however, it was not thanks to starter Chris Sale. Indeed, the tall southpaw allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits in just four innings of work.
And the main interested party did not mince his words after the match.
This is rotten. I made three starts and I just have to be better. I just have to be better.
Sale struggled with his control all night, throwing just 55 of his 81 shots. And the gunner doesn’t seem to have a solution.
Sometimes I control my shots very well and I do a good job. Other times it’s right in the middle of home plate, it’s dead, and it doesn’t come out well. I pay for it. For sure.
This counter-performance leads him to post a high earned run average of 11.25 after three outings.
The Sox pitcher won’t give up on his team and will continue to work on his shortcomings, but let’s just say he’ll have to do it sooner rather than later to help a roster that badly needs help on many levels.
