Pascal Siakam and the Raptors shocked by the aggressiveness of betting fans

It’s not limited to the NBA, but sports betting has visibly changed the behavior of some fans towards the athletes they follow. Betting supporters are thus much more aggressive, especially on social networks, even going very, very far in their messages against a backdrop of impunity.

“This culture is the craziest thing in my eyes because they literally wish you were dead because they missed their bet”explains Pascal Siakam in the Draymond Green podcast. “I just want to say I don’t like it, and stop texting me saying you lost your bet, I don’t care. You can miss your bet today, tomorrow I don’t care. It does not matter to me “.

The Cameroonian is not the first Raptor to be shocked by the particularly aggressive attitude of the punters. Fred VanVleet thus explains that it took him away from his social networks, because “It’s hard to understand what it’s like to read private messages every day wishing your mother’s death…”

His teammate Chris Boucher confirms that it weighs on the morale of the players.

“Someone wrote to me, ‘I chose the wrong slave today.’ Someone really sent me this message. I had to read it. I could not believe it. We are lucky to be in Toronto and have the best NBA fans. But imagine receiving messages like this. This is not what you want…”

The native of Montreal thus explains in particular receiving heaps of messages from betting fans who ask him, for example, to score a certain number of points for the next meeting…

“It affects you”assures Chris Boucher. “But do you want to delete your social networks? You lose your life, the life you should have lived. Everything changes. I see how someone could lose their minds over all of this. If you don’t have the right people around you and if you don’t have the right motivation or intention in what you are doing, you can get lost easily. »
