Pirates sweep Red Sox

Who spits in the air, it falls on his nose. That’s exactly what just happened to Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo.

After the two-in-three wins over the Baltimore Orioles this weekend, Verdugo said his team had confounded skeptics who didn’t believe Boston had a good roster. Daring though…

Now here we are four days later and those same Red Sox just got swept away by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yes yes, you read that right. Candy!

It was the Pirates’ first road sweep against an American League opponent since 2018.

To add insult to injury, the Red Stockings have scored a meager four runs in their last 26 innings. That’s slightly different from the phenomenal offense that Verdugo boasted of flailing about.

Manager Alex Cora will therefore have his work cut out for him to bring the focus of his troops back to the base, which is to focus on winning victories, something that won’t be easy with the training he has at hand.

The Red Sox now head to Detroit where they will face the Tigers this afternoon. The first pitch will be made at 1:10 p.m. and Chris Sale will be on the mound for the first game of a series of three. He will try to save face for his teammate Verdugo.

A duel of four games is then scheduled against the Rays in Tampa Bay.
