NHL: Summary of NHL games, Friday, March 31, 2023

Blake Wheeler ended a 21-game scoreless drought and added an assist as the Winnipeg Jets showed a rare burst on offense to claim a 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

The victory allows the Jets to consolidate their place in the playoffs by occupying the second and last place among the teams drafted in their conference, two points ahead of Calgary, which defeated Vancouver on Friday.

The Jets had scored just three goals or less in their previous nine games where they were notably shut out three times.

Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Dylan DeMelo and Nikolaj Ehlers also had a goal and an assist for Winnipeg, which snapped a two-game slide and recorded a fourth win in its last nine games (4-5-0 ).

Nino Niederreiter scored Winnipeg’s other goal. Mason Appleton and Vladislav Namestnikov both provided two assists.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 shots for the Jets (42-31-3), who entered a five-game home run as they try to hold on to the last playoff spot in the West.

David Perron and Joe Veleno scored third period goals for the Red Wings (33-33-9), who had won 3-2 yesterday at home against the Carolina Hurricanes.

 

Toffoli plays the heroes and completes a great comeback

VANCOUVER – Tyler Toffoli scored his second goal of the game at 3:27 in overtime as the Calgary Flames beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 on Friday.

Troy Stecher, Blake Coleman and Jonathan Huberdeau were the other Flames scorers.

Jacob Markstrom made 14 saves for the Flames, victorious in their last three games.

Anthony Beauvillier, Aidan McDonough, Elias Pettersson and Conor Garland netted for the Canucks.

A 23-year-old American, McDonough scored his first goal in the National League.

The Flames remain two points out of a playoff berth with five games remaining. The team will host the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Thatcher Demko blocked 36 shots in a losing cause.

 

Robertson has a blast against the Coyotes

TEMPE, Ariz. – Jason Robertson had one goal and four points on Friday to help the Dallas Stars win 5-2 over the Arizona Coyotes.

Robertson’s goal broke the tie with 22 seconds remaining in the middle period. Thanks to his four-point performance, Robertson now has 95 this season, a high since the Stars organization moved from Minnesota to Texas.

Joe Pavelski, Roope Hintz, Jamie Benn and Max Domi also scored for Dallas, which swept the four-game series against the Coyotes.

The Stars are one point behind the Wild, section leaders. Colorado is two points behind the Stars with a game in hand. Dallas will also play in Denver on Saturday night.

Jusso Valimaki and Connor Mackey scored for Arizona. Clayton Keller took part in the Valimaki net, scoring a point in his 14th straight game.

Karel Vejmelka has stopped 26 shots for the Coyotes, who have lost their last six games.
