Damon Stoudamire to leave Celtics for NCAA

Main coach in NCAA rather than assistant in NBA: this is the choice that Damon Stoudamire did a second time. According to ESPN, the current assistant in the staff of Joe Mazzulla at the Celtics will indeed finalize in the next few hours a five-year contract to become the new “head coach” of Georgia Tech.

“A second time”, because “Mighty Mouse” has already had a similar position: it was for five seasons between 2016 and 2021, at the head of the small college of Pacific, in the WCC conference (that of Gonzaga, in particular ). His work there had been praised since he left the job in 2021 before joining Ime Udoka in Boston with 71 wins and 77 losses, an honorable record given the limited financial resources and low media coverage of the program located in the Oregon.

Chris Bosh, Stephen Marbury and Jose Alvarado exited Georgia Tech

For this new experience in the NCAA, the former player of Toronto and Portland, in particular, therefore takes the direction of Georgia to take the reins of the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech, in the ACC conference. A leap into the big leagues compared to his previous job, since his new team, from which Jose Alvarado in particular comes, plays in the ACC, the North Carolina conference and Duke among others.

The challenge that awaits him is substantial: to revive the sporting ambitions of the program in the suburbs of Atlanta, stuck in mediocrity for several years now (109 wins and 114 losses over the last seven seasons). However, this college has trained many NBA stars, from Kenny Anderson to Stephen Marbury via Chris Bosh, Mark Price and Dennis Scott.
