The Ottawa Senators have announced the acquisition of defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Arizona Coyotes.
In return, Ottawa gives up a conditional 1st round pick in 2023, a conditional 2nd round pick in 2024 and a 2nd round pick in 2026.
If the 2023 first-round pick is in the top-5, the Coyotes will instead receive an unprotected 2024 first-round pick. Also, if the Senators reach the 2023 Eastern Final, the 2nd-round pick in 2024 will instead become a 1st round pick in 2024, protected from the top-10. If the 2024 1st round pick is a top 10 pick, the Coyotes will receive an unprotected 1st round pick in 2025.
The 24-year-old Chychrun has seven goals and 28 points in 36 games this season with Arizona. Drafted 16th overall in the 2016 draft by the Coyotes, he is in the fourth year of a six-year contract that earns him an annual average of $4.6 million. He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024-2025 campaign.
The defenseman hasn’t played a game since Feb. 10 against the Chicago Blackhawks. He was sidelined for “trade-related” reasons, which caused him to miss eight games.
In 373 NHL games, Chychrun scored 76 goals and totaled 170 points.
Rumors of trade persisted for several months in the file of the rear of the Coyotes. Prior to the start of the 2022-23 campaign in September, he let it be known that he wanted to be traded to a Stanley Cup contender.
He will eventually join Ottawa, which ranks sixth in the Atlantic Division. The Senators are having a good time with six wins in their last ten games, including three straight wins. The Sens are five points out of a draft berth in the East, with 22 games to go.
With this transaction, Chychrun joins a young defensive squad in Ottawa alongside Thomas Chabot and young Jake Sanderson.
