The New Jersey Devils won their Sunday afternoon game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with a goal from defenseman Dougie Hamilton in overtime.
Moments before the winning goal, Marcus Pettersson believed he had given the victory to the Penguins when he had deceived the vigilance of Vitek Vanecek. However, his goal was not allowed as Pittsburgh got caught with four players on the rink on the streak.
Taking advantage of a four against three power play, Hamilton accepted the pass from Jack Hughes and let go of a cannonball in the upper part to give the victory to his team.
Earlier in the game, Hughes beat Tristan Jarry on a long shot to help him reach the 30-goal mark this season. The 21-year-old American became the second player in history to reach 30 goals before his 22nd birthday. Brendan Shanahan achieved the feat on March 29, 1990.
For his part, Sidney Crosby was the only scorer for the Penguins, thanks to his 22nd goal of the campaign. Former Canadian defender Jeff Petry was complicit in his captain’s goal.
