A contract extension for Pete Alonso is not imminent

Pete Alonso is one of MLB’s fine home run hitters. He demonstrates it every year at the MLB home run contest, but he also demonstrates it during the season.

Last year, he reached the plateau of 40 homers for the second time in his young career, he who has four seasons behind the tie. He hit 37 in 2021 and he would have hit at least 40 had the 2020 season been complete.

  • 2019: 53 circuits
  • 2020: 16 circuits
  • 2021: 37 circuits
  • 2022: 40 circuits

What Mets fans are interested in is whether Pete Alonso will be the next to sign a long-term deal with a club that isn’t afraid to spend.

But in reality, he might have to wait. Why?

No, the club will not be afraid to pay him, but the main interested party is two years away from autonomy and he shows no signs of slowing down.

Neither is the market showing any signs of slowing down. So it might make sense for him to wait and the Mets could breathe a little with the big contracts…for now.

But we can understand Mets fans not wanting to lose Alonso and Jeff McNeil, two guys who grew up in the New York Mets organization and know how to respond to market pressure.

And as Steve Cohen has the means of his ambitions, we can think that if the club wants to keep them and the guys want to stay, we should not worry too much. Let time take its course and things should work out fine, I imagine.
