Basketball News

16 years ago, Madison Square Garden was transformed into an octagon!

Before joining the Knicks in 2011 after an endless soap opera, Carmelo anthony was the star player for the Nuggets. A real franchise player supported in particular by JR Smith, and on December 16, 2006, they will take part in one of the biggest fights in NBA history.

Blows, provocations and an almost general scrum that lead to expulsions and suspensions in the Mecca of basketball. And this two years after the infamous fight between the Pacers and the Pistons.

It all starts with a fault, like two years before…

As at the Palace of Auburn Hills, events occur when the match is folded (100-119) and there are only a handful of seconds left to play…

On a counterattack from JR Smith, Mardy Collins pinned the rear of the Nuggets to the ground. Obviously the Nugget reveals himself immediately to explain himself, Carmelo Anthony follows quickly while Nate Robinson insults the two Denver players. An attitude that ulcerated JR Smith, who jumped on him and the clash moved to the front rows of Madison Square Garden.

A few seconds of madness later, everything seems to have calmed down but Melo, in an excess of stupidity, just punches Mardy Collins in the face and then flees. Jarred Jeffries pops up but a lot of players and coaches are holding the winger back so he doesn’t do worse than Melo.

When everything is calm again or almost, the ten players then present on the ground are excluded by the referees, including the famous Dick Bavetta. The NBA sanctions do not take long to fall: 47 suspension matches in total, including 15 for Carmelo Anthony.

Twenty-four hours later, Allen Iverson arrives at the Nuggets!

JR Smith and Nate Robinson will be banned for ten matches, Mardy Collins six, Jared Jeffries four, finally Nene and Jerome James will only take one match. The two franchises will be billed $500,000.

The next day, the Nuggets will make the most spectacular transfer of the season by bringing in Allen Iverson from Philadelphia. Carmelo Anthony, at the time of the events, was the league’s leading scorer with 31.6 points per game and his image will be tarnished for several weeks. Ironically, he and JR Smith would next play for the New York Knicks…
