EuroBasket 2022 | Distribution of sanctions after the incidents in Georgia – Turkey

FIBA’s investigation was still not complete. More than three months after the incidents that occurred during the Georgia-Turkey match at the last Euro, the International Federation announced a series of sanctions against the protagonists concerned, including no less than four players and the two federations.

It is recalled that Turkey had accused several opponents of having left the bench to attack Furkan Korkmaz in the locker room, the police not intervening to stop the fight, but on the contrary attacking the Turkish delegation.

As a result, Goga Bitadze was fined 15,000 CHF (Swiss francs, the equivalent of approximately €15,000) and placed on probation for three years. If the player commits the same or a similar offense during this period, he will be immediately suspended for five official games, in addition to any sanction imposed for the new offense.

Tornike Shengelia receives a fine of 5,000 CHF and will be immediately suspended for two games if he slips up again during his three-year probation. Sentenced to pay 3,000 CHF, Duda Sanadze risks a match suspension in the event of a new offense within three years.

For his part, Furkan Korkmaz is fined CHF 6,000 and would be deprived of three matches in the event of further excess. Finally, the Georgian Federation will have to pay a fine of 40,000 CHF, and the Turkish Federation 15,000.
