The Mets in the heart of the derby Andrew Benintendi

The Mets have struck a blow by getting their hands on Justin Verlander. The pitcher, who will replace Jacob deGrom among the starting pitchers of the club, therefore finds his friend Max Scherzer for the rest of things.

But are the Mets done with their shopping? No.

In fact, the club has several needs to fill (another starting pitcher and relief help are at the heart of the plan) and Steve Cohen has a lot of money to spend.

It should not be overlooked that the Mets want to add a stick in the field. Ideally, that would be Brandon Nimmo, but the club need to consider other options. From the lot? Andrew Benintendi.

Ideally, the club would be looking for a center fielder, but the club can reshuffle their squad to push Starling Marte to the center, just like in the old days.

I don’t know if Benintendi wants to stay in New York. And if so, would he rather do it in a Yankees uniform?

Should the market for the former Red Sox, Royals and Yankees swell, it’s clear the outfielder could get his hands on a three- or four-year contract at a great price.

Does the Mets care? Because we know that a few clubs, including the Astros and the Yankees, are also in on it. And no one will make me believe that there are only three clubs in the race…
