The Pelicans can count on their bench

The big win (+45) against the Warriors saw the Pelicans’ substitutes score 57 points against Golden State’s C team. A new good performance for the New Orleans bench which has been shining for a few meetings.

Over the last five matches, the substitutes have indeed scored 44 points on average with 52% shooting success. In the same sequence, only the Dallas bench does better with 46 points, and no team steals more balls (4.6). In addition, their +/- is also the second best, still behind the Mavericks, with a +5.4 points.

This therefore explains, in part, how the Pelicans managed to win four out of five games, including two without Zion Williamson.

“It’s very important if we want to go far in the playoffs”explains Willie Green for the Times Picayune. “We have substitutes who can be very good, who are not afraid. They play together and with joy. It makes the difference when you wonder how far this team can go. »

However, the coach does not have a huge sixth man available, capable of scoring 20 or 25 points per evening like a Tyler Herro last season in Miami or a Jordan Clarkson in Utah. He has more of a second five with Trey Murphy III, whose statistics are inflated by the matches where he replaced Zion Williamson, Naji Marshall, Jose Alvarado, or even Larry Nance Jr. and Devonte ‘Graham.

“We have a lot of talent in this team, which is very deep”insists Zion Williamson. “The game against the Warriors is a great example of that. The further we go in the season, the better our rotations will be. There is something special here. »

Larry Nance Jr. summarizes the mission of this small army, which has held the shock during the absences of Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and Herbert Jones since the start of the season.

“Our job is to push the opposing team to put their stars back on the floor as quickly as possible. Thus, they rest less and in the last quarter, they are exhausted. »
