By signing him at a lower cost in the middle of the summer (2.30 million dollars over a season), the Raptors may have made a nice move with Juancho Hernangomez, alias “Bo Cruz” in the movie “Hustle”.
There has already been the EuroBasket and this memorable final, during which he particularly shone with his outside shot against France (27 points at 7/9 at 3-points). In the process, the “training camp” ended up convincing the Canadian franchise, Nick Nurse having particularly appreciated the versatile profile of the little brother of Willy Hernangomez.
“It’s something we need in relation to his shooting. I like his cuts, his passing game, and we discover that he is also a very good team defender. We are evaluating how we can use it with the ball too. I think he will work his way up the rotation, especially at the start of the season,” slipped the coach.
An additional weapon in his device
The occasional absences of Chris Boucher and Otto Porter Jr, affected in the hamstrings, should indeed allow Juancho Hernangomez to benefit from a little extra playing time. It will be up to him to use it wisely in order to keep his place more durably in the rotation after leaving the bench.
For now, the Spain international continues to learn about his role alongside his new teammates.
“I feel comfortable playing with the ‘second unit’, helping as much as possible, spacing the field, moving the ball around, looking for the mismatches that we really have. I try to adapt to a system with five guys who can do the same thing, who are very physical. With the help of training and games, I’m going to get more involved in the team, that’s for sure.”, he pointed out.
In Toronto in any case, everyone is delighted to have recovered the position 3/4, even Fred VanVleet, who appreciates being able to have an additional “weapon”.
“He’s got a great basketball IQ, he knows how to play, he’s played on winning teams, he can really space out the game and obviously shoot 3-pointers.” thus slipped the playmaker. “I think Juancho is an excellent role player and a guy who can facilitate my work, Pascal’s work, everyone’s”.
