Dolphins: record extension for Xavien Howard (CB)

Shortly before the start of the Dolphins’ last training camp, the front office had promised Xavien Howard to reconsider his contract in order to calm his desires to leave. The Floridians finally kept their word. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, an additional 2 years and $50.7 million was added to his remaining 3 years and $39.3 million. The cornerback is now the highest paid player in his position with 90 million dollars spread over the next 5 seasons, including 55 million over the next 3 seasons alone.

A just reward for one of the best interceptors in the league in recent years. The category leader in 2018 (7) and 2020 (10), he totaled 16 passes defended and 5 interceptions last season. A 2021 season at the end of which he was able to win a 3and career Pro Bowl selection.

With Howard and Byron Jones, Miami now has 2 of the 10 highest earners in the position. It’s up to them to prove that they can live up to the investment made to allow the Dolphins to do better than 16th place in the standings for yards allowed in the air.
