Juwan Howard was infamous late in the game between the Michigan Wolverines and the Wisconsin Badgers, coming close to coming to blows with Badgers coach Greg Gard before finally hitting the assistant Joe Krabbenhoft, all for a late timeout that he didn’t appreciate.
There followed an early fight that the university did not appreciate at all. The decision therefore quickly fell, and Juwan Howard will be suspended from his coaching duties until the end of the season and will have to pay a fine of 40,000 dollars.
The former NBA player had previously apologized publicly just before the penalties fell.
“After taking the time to reflect on what happened, I realized how unacceptable my actions and words were, and how it affected so many people. I’m really sorry about that. I send my sincere apologies to my players and their families, my staff, my family and to Michigan fans around the world. I would also like to personally apologize to Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft and his family. I’ve been talking a lot lately about what it was like to be a Michigan man and represent this university with class and pride. But I didn’t do it or ensure my role as an example to my student athletes. I will learn from my mistakes and this one will never happen again. No excuse ! “.
Moussa Diabaté also sanctioned
Among the other sanctions pronounced on the side of Michigan, Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabaté received one game suspension. On the Wisconsin side, only Jahcobi Neath was suspended for one game.
“We hope the incident gives our coaches and student-athletes an opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a way that demonstrates restraint and leadership on and off the field.”, said Kevin Warren“Commissioner” of the Big Ten.
The Wisconsin coach will not be suspended but will have to pay a $10,000 fine which will be paid by Wisconsin Athleticas. As for the Michigan bench, it’s assistant Phil Martelli who will be acting for the last five games of the season.
