They got together to counter Jaylen Brown! The winger imagined he could restore a point lead to the Celtics, ten seconds from the end. But Cade Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart, who accompanied the gesture of his rear, opposed. Saddiq Bey thus went “bumper” as his pivot should be because Detroit was preparing to sign the surprise of the evening, by winning in Boston.
While Jerami Grant finished as the team’s top scorer, and converted the winning shot, the three youngsters mentioned above were essential in this landmark victory: sixth double-double of the year for Saddiq Bey ( 20 points and 11 rebounds), full game for Cade Cunningham (20 points but 8/22 on shots, 8 rebounds and 6 assists) and solid outing for Isaiah Stewart (12 points and 6 rebounds).
These three young people are now among the main cogs in the reconstruction of the Pistons. And despite the weakness of the record of their franchise (13 wins – 45 losses), penultimate in the league, they were all three invited to the “Rising Stars Challenge”. Detroit has never had so many representatives at this event.
Since 2015, young Pistons have even rarely been invited (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in 2015 then Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk in 2020). And you have to go back to 1995 and Grant Hill for the last rookie trophy of the year.
Their coach, Dwane Casey, sees it as a good “ sign for the Michigan franchise: “ I would prefer them to be in the ‘All-Star Game’, but the ‘Rising Stars’ is good for us. It’s a step for them in their career and for our organization, our team in the future, to have so many young guys recognized by the rest of the league. They deserve it, they worked. But we have a lot of work to do.“
To see how far this work will lead the Pistons on the collective level and if some of the young shoots, including the number one of the last Draft, Cade Cunningham, will manage to win an invitation for the match “of the big ones” in the future. We will have to wait a few years before knowing it because this core, to which Killian Hayes can be added, was only drafted this year or the year before.
” We are one of the youngest teams in the league.”recalls Dwane Casey, whose team has an average age of about 24 years. “It’s just a sign that we’re going in the right direction.“
