In a profile a la Kyle Korver 2.0, Doug McDermott is one of those players who symbolized the advent of 3-point shooting in the league over the past decade.
Arrived in the NBA in 2014, the winger has made shooting behind the arc his trademark, to the point of having become a benchmark in the field since he passed the bar of 700 3-point baskets scored in career .
Doug McDermott broke that milestone in the last game against Houston by adding five more 3-pointers to bring his total to 702. He also becomes the fourth active player to reach this bar while shooting at more than 40% career success, alongside Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Joe Harris.
Only 31 players with more than 700 3-pointers with at least 40% success
In history, it remains a rare feat that only concerns about thirty players. For example, Reggie Miller has scored more than 2,500 3-point baskets in his career, but below 40% success (39.5%).
“Shooting is something that is really close to my heart. I feel like that’s the reason I’m still in the league.”, explained Doug McDermott after racking up a nice 16/25 from behind the arc in their last four games. “It shows you that I’ve been in the league for a while. It’s just a lot of shots. I worked very hard on it and spent a lot of time on it. To see him rewarded is quite special”.
Although San Antonio remains one of the teams that uses this most popular weapon the least in today’s league (31.5 attempts per game on average), Doug McDermott helps open spaces towards the circle each night with Keldon Johnson, which also peaks beyond 43% success at 3-pointers this season.
“He does a lot of good things for us. He’s so good at shooting. He has such a fast shooting mechanic that the defense has to respect him. It opens up prospects for me and the other guys,” recognized his teammate Jakob Poeltl.
His new goal in this area will begin this Wednesday in Cleveland: “I hope to add 700 more”.
