Former Montreal Expos and New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya was hired Wednesday by Major League Baseball as an amateur recruiting consultant.
He will advise the baseball operations department on national and international recruiting initiatives. Minaya will report to Morgan Sword, senior vice president of baseball operations.
Minaya, 63, became a scout with the Texas Rangers in 1984 and notably signed Sammy Sosa. He eventually became director of professional and international recruiting and he left in September 1997 to become assistant general manager of the Mets.
He joined the Expos in February 2002, becoming Major League Baseball’s first Hispanic general manager. Minaya returned with the Mets as general manager from September 2004 to October 2010, then was fired. He served as senior vice president of baseball operations in San Diego from December 2011 to January 2015.
He served as senior adviser to Players Association President Tony Clark until December 2017, then joined the Mets as a special assistant until November 2020.
