James Harden has decided to get involved via his Impact13 foundation and is even aiming for the “NBA Community Assist Award”. Already last month, he had taken advantage of the Nets’ road trip to Los Angeles to visit his former high school in Artesia and make a substantial donation: $10,000 to finance scholarships for the most deserving students, and the renovation of weight rooms, locker rooms and an indoor basketball court.
This time, it is with another gift, towards the Haitian population, that James Harden distinguished himself. The Nets player slipped that he had been made aware by a friend of Haitian origin and that he too wanted to participate to help improve the daily lives of local youth while promoting the practice of sport.
“Haiti is one of the poorest places in the world, so we wanted to see if we could make an impact and help people there. We just tried to give as much as we could to these young people because they need it, they deserve it, and we can help in that way.”, did he declare.
Kits for Haitian youth
In collaboration with the “GoPuff” (go-to-platform) delivery platform, 5,000 kits of essential products and supplies will be distributed. They will include adidas backpacks, socks, shoes, water bottles and basketballs, as well as hygiene products (deodorants, shower gels and lotions). 3,000 kits of more intimate products (condoms, tampons, postpartum underwear and sanitary napkins) will also be made available.
“Leading by example is the only way to inspire others to get involved and join the movement to change lives for the better. I’ve learned a lot about the current crisis in Haiti and the issues Haitians face every day, and I want to make sure I’m playing my part in helping people there.”, he added.
James Harden also participated in the renovation of a basketball court, in collaboration with local artist Olivier Ganthier as part of a partnership with the Barbancourt foundation.
